Robert Leslie Miles, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Miles has been a surgeon since 1985 and has been at St. Vincent's East in Birmingham, Alabama since 1990, where he has served as President of the Medical Staff.
In early 2001 his interest in bariatric surgery peaked after learning bariatric surgery could be considered a surgical treatment or cure for diabetes. Further research on bariatric surgery prompted him to begin performing the Roux en Y Gastric Bypass in mid-2001. He was the first surgeon in Alabama to perform the Lap Band that same year. Thrilled with the results of weight loss surgery, he then developed the award winning Surgical Weight Loss Program at St. Vincent's East (then called Medical Center East).
Dr. Miles has been designated as a 'Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery', which demonstrates commitment to excellence through his participation in ongoing data collections to continually evaluate and improve patient care.
Dr. Miles and his wife, Anita, have 3 children. His favorite pastimes include fishing, coaching the kid's soccer teams and college football (University of Tennessee and Ole Miss).
