How Do You Choose a Surgeon?
What should factor in to your decision when choosing a surgeon to trust with your well being and indeed your life? There are many factors to consider but some of the most important factors are skill, experience, character. Your surgeon should stay up to date. He should be caring and have good interpersonal skills. You must be able to communicate well with him. He should be confident. Of course there are more factors to consider, but price should be way down the list.
How do you determine a surgeons skills and tell whether he stays up to date. One excellent way is this: is his practice recognized as a Center of Excellence by the American society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery? If he is not, keep looking.
When you do look at prices, be sure to compare apples to apples and not to oranges. What does the price include and what does it leave out. Do you get complication insurance? You must realize that if you pay for a surgery on your own, and if you have a complication, your insurance will not jump in and then pay for the complication for the operation that they did not pay for to begin with. If you are hospitalized with a complication, you will have to pay for that hospitalization unless your surgeon protects you with complication insurance as part of the price of his surgery. Only the very best surgeons with extremely low complication rates are able to offer this benefit. I would never consider private pay without this protection, period.
